Almanac of books on dental implantation: Literature analysis

Global Index of Books on Implantology 1985-2008

Greetings, colleagues. My name is Alexander Apokin. I have 25 years of continuous clinical practice in dentistry behind me. All this time, I have been guided by one unshakable scientific law: before creating something new, study in detail what has been done before you.

Today, commercial implantology is overloaded with informational noise. From every corner, doctors are being sold yet another «author’s method» for incisions or sutures, which upon closer inspection turn out to be just reinventing the wheel. True professionalism and the safety of our patients begin not with marketing slogans, but with the ability to stand on the shoulders of giants—those global researchers who have spent decades on the histological and biomechanical verification of every step taken by the surgeon and the prosthodontist.

This page is not just a dry list of fundamental monographs. Before you is a living digital navigation map, in which I have invested months of painstaking analytical work. I have gathered, structured, and organized the entire golden fund of the world’s medical press—from Quintessence to Springer Nature. Each of the 7 key areas—from basic osteotomy to the most complex total reconstructions and the elimination of peri-implantitis—is analyzed through the prism of strict biological laws, figures, and chronological trends.

I created this interactive atlas of knowledge for thinking doctors who want to move away from working «by intuition» and transition to the plane of absolutely predictable, evidence-based medicine. Study these patterns, absorb the experience of the authors who define the philosophy of modern implantology, and let this knowledge become your solid foundation in the operating room. Enjoy your immersion into top-tier science.

Period before 2002

An exact count, down to the last unit, of all books on implantology published in the world before 2002 is a task that no library catalog can handle with 100% accuracy (including the US Library of Congress Union Catalog LOC or WorldCat). The reason lies in bibliographic nuances: in the 70s and 80s, many fundamental works were published as «conference proceedings,» monographs on materials science, or individual chapters in large atlases on maxillofacial surgery and prosthodontics.

Nevertheless, based on scientometric and library databases, it is possible to derive a very accurate statistic and structure of this book fund.

In total, in the period from the late 1960s (the time of the first English-language publications by P.-I. Brånemark) and strictly until December 31, 2001, about 180–220 specialized monographs, textbooks, and large clinical atlases entirely dedicated to dental implantology were published in English worldwide.

If we break down this array chronologically and by publisher, we will see a clear picture of the discipline’s evolution:

1. Chronological Distribution (Market Dynamics)

  • Before 1985 («The Era of Enthusiasts and Experiments»): ~15–20 books. During this period, works on blade, subperiosteal, and needle implants were published (mainly by authors like Leonard Linkow). There was little scientific justification; a purely mechanical approach dominated. The only breakthrough at the end of this period was the English translation of Brånemark’s works in 1985.
  • 1986 – 1995 («The Osseointegration Explosion»): ~60–70 books. After the recognition of Brånemark’s concept at the Toronto Conference, global medical publishers began to commission textbooks from clinicians on a massive scale. The first serious works on bed anatomy, the histology of the «bone-titanium» interface, and guided bone regeneration (GBR) appeared.
  • 1996 – 2001 («Standardization and Esthetics»): ~100–130 books. A market boom. Books became highly specialized: separately on sinus lifting, separately on working with soft tissues (Palacci, Misch), separately on implant prosthetics and dental laboratory protocols.

2. Distribution by Key Global Publishers

Approximately 85% of this entire English-language fund is distributed among five giants of the medical press:

[Quintessence Publishing] ═════════════════════► ~35-40% (Absolute leader in graphics and atlases)
[Mosby / W.B. Saunders / Elsevier] ═══════════► ~25-30% (Fundamental textbooks, including C. Misch)
[Thieme Medical Publishers] ══════════════════► ~10% (European school, high-quality color atlases)
[Lippincott Williams & Wilkins] ══════════════► ~8% (Surgical and periodontal aspects)
[Others (Wiley-Blackwell, CRC Press, etc.)] ► ~12-17% (Biomaterials, mechanics, engineering)

3. Why Were There Relatively Few?

Compared to today (when hundreds of books and manuals are published annually), the pool of literature before 2002 was narrow for three reasons:

  1. Strict Monopoly of Scientific Schools. The market was controlled by two main concepts: the Swedish school of Brånemark (screws, two-stage protocol) and the Swiss school of ITI/Straumann (one-stage implants, monolithic constructions). Most books were written by the leading figures of these institutions.
  2. Complexity and High Cost of Publishing. A clinical atlas required hundreds of high-quality color macro photographs of operations. In the 80s and 90s, printing such books cost a fortune, and publishers only took on guaranteed bestsellers from world-renowned authors.
  3. Scientific Articles Instead of Books. The main body of data was published in periodicals. Scientometric analysis shows that before 1990, fewer than 30 indexed articles on implants were published worldwide per year. The surge began only in the mid-90s with the development of journals like JOMI (International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Implants) and COIR (Clinical Oral Implants Research).

It was these ~200 books that formed the foundation on which all of modern global implantology stands today. They detailed the biological limits that we are trying to expand today with the help of digital technologies.

Period after 2002

The period after 2002 became an era of a true publishing explosion in dental implantology. If before 2002 there were only about 200 fundamental English-language works worldwide, in the following two decades the discipline finally segmented, and commercial interest in it grew exponentially.

It is impossible to name an exact figure down to the last unit due to the huge number of small-circulation university manuals and translated editions, but according to the union catalogs of medical libraries (PubMed Bookshelf, WorldCat, Library of Congress), the total fund of specialized English-language literature on implantology published from 2002 to 2026 is around 1200–1500 titles (including reissues, highly specialized manuals, and monographs).

This massive body of literature is distributed according to several key characteristics.

1. Chronological Dynamics of Book Releases

  • 2003–2010 («Digital Transition and Biomaterials»): ~350–400 books. A period of mass transition from analog protocols to the first software for CBCT planning. A boom in literature on sinus lifting, bone grafting, and the study of the microstructure of implant surfaces (SLA, TiUnite).
  • 2011–2020 («Narrow Specialization and Pink Esthetics»): ~600–700 books. Publishers stopped simply releasing «textbooks on implantology.» The market was filled with narrowly focused monographs: separately on navigation templates, immediate loading, soft tissue augmentation, management of complications (peri-implantitis), and zygomatic (Zygoma) implants.
  • 2021–2026 («The Era of Total Digitalization and AI»): ~250–300 books. The focus shifted to fully digital workflows, the use of artificial intelligence in diagnostics, photogrammetry, and immediate total prosthetics (All-on-4 / All-on-6).

2. Market Structure: Leaders of the Global Medical Press

After 2002, the geography and monopoly of publishers changed slightly, but the key players still hold the lion’s share of the market:

[Quintessence Publishing] ═════════════════════════► ~35% (The gold standard for clinical macro-atlases)
[Wiley-Blackwell] ═════════════════════════════════► ~25% (Dominate in evidence-based periodicals and ITI textbooks)
[Elsevier / Mosby / Saunders] ═════════════════════► ~20% (Fundamental multi-volume sets, the legacy of Carl Misch)
[Springer Nature] ═════════════════════════════════► ~10% (Academic research, biomaterials, engineering)
[New players (Edra Publishing, MDPI, etc.)] ══════► ~10% (New generation practical guides)

3. Key Bestsellers and Foundational Series (after 2002)

If one were to build a modern library, this period is represented by several epoch-making series:

  1. ITI Treatment Guide Series (Publisher: Quintessence) Step-by-step international protocols from the ITI (International Team for Implantology) group. Each volume is dedicated to a specific clinical task: from a single defect in the esthetic zone to the treatment of elderly patients. By 2026, the series already has more than 13 volumes.
  2. Reissues of Carl Misch and the Development of His School (Publisher: Elsevier)
    • «Dental Implant Prosthetics» (2nd Edition, 2014) — pure prosthodontics from Misch.
    • «Misch’s Contemporary Implant Dentistry» (4th Edition, ed. by Randolph Resnik) — the main surgical textbook, updated after Misch’s death.
  3. Books on Guided Bone and Soft Tissue Regeneration
    • The works of Istvan Urban («Vertical and Horizontal Ridge Augmentation», 2017) — revolutionized the understanding of working with membranes and the sausage technique.
    • The works of Giovanni Zucchelli — turned the understanding of gum grafting around teeth and implants upside down.
  4. Fundamental Interdisciplinary Two-Volume Sets
    • «Clinical Periodontology and Implant Dentistry» (6th and 7th Editions, ed. by Jan Lindhe, Niklaus Lang, Tord Berglundh) — the main global academic standard, where periodontology and implantology are combined into a single biological concept.

The explosive growth in the number of books is easily explained: implantology ceased to be an elite operation «for select centers» and became a daily practice for the general dentist. Accordingly, the demand for high-quality clinical algorithms (Step-by-Step Treatment Protocols) forced publishers to release dozens of new books every month.

The period before 1985 in dental implantology is indeed called the «era of enthusiasts.» The literature of this time reflects the dramatic transition from empirical, purely mechanical attempts to hold metal in bone (subperiosteal, blade, and needle implants) to the strict biological concept of osseointegration, which was finally established at the Toronto Conference in 1982 and was first fundamentally published in English in 1985.

Below is a detailed table of key English-language publications from this era. The catalog includes works by the main ideologists of both directions—the mechanical (the school of L. Linkow, C. Babbush) and the biological (the school of P.-I. Brånemark).

Analytical Note on the Register:

  1. Lack of ISBN Standardization: For books published around the 1960s–1970s (e.g., early manuals by Weiss or Linkow), ISBN codes were either absent in the American system or were assigned retrospectively upon reprinting, as the unified ISO 2108 standard only became widespread in the first half of the 1970s.
  2. Paradigm Shift in 1985: Brånemark’s 1985 book completely devalued most of the literature published before it (including the works of Linkow and Weiss), as it proved the failure of fibrointegration (the development of connective tissue around the implant) and established a strict, sterile protocol for preparing the bone bed at low speeds with cooling to avoid bone necrosis at temperatures above 47°C.

The period from 1986 to 1995 in global dentistry is called the «Osseointegration Explosion.» After the recognition of the Swedish protocols of Professor P.-I. Brånemark at the Toronto Conference, the academic community and leading publishers completely realigned. This decade was marked by the final abandonment of blade implants in favor of root-form screws, the strict standardization of surgical stages (control of bone overheating, torque), the development of prosthetic components, and the emergence of guided bone regeneration (GBR) techniques.

Below is a fundamental bibliographic register of key English-language publications from this era that shaped the modern school of implantology.

Key Markers of Literature Evolution in This List:

  1. 1987–1990: The literature is strictly academic and descriptive. The authors prove the very possibility of the safe presence of titanium in bone and argue about design (the Linkow school versus the Brånemark school).
  2. 1991–1993: Commercial giants like the first edition by Carl Misch appear, transforming implantology from a «scientific experiment» into a comprehensible step-by-step engineering discipline for practicing clinicians.
  3. 1994–1995: Books become narrowly focused monographs. The market became saturated with general knowledge, and publishers began to release separate works on sinus lifting (Jensen), GBR (Buser), and single-tooth esthetics (Tarnow).

Here, a turning point in the history of implantology is clearly visible: the transition from general theoretical discussions to precise biomechanical calculations, the emergence of Carl Misch’s fundamental bone classification (1993), and the birth of the first standardized protocols for guided bone regeneration (GBR) from the Bern school of Daniel Buser (1994).

Analytical Trends of the Second Twenty (1989–1995):

  1. Emergence of Biomechanical Analysis: The books by Albrektsson and Sennerby (1993) shift the focus from purely surgical «screwing in» to the physics of stress distribution. Clinicians begin to understand that excessive leverage of the prosthetic construction can destroy osseointegration.
  2. Shift in Focus to «Pink Esthetics»: The works of Richard Lazzara in 1995 clearly illustrate the beginning of a new era in implantology. Whereas before, success was simply retaining an implant under a removable prosthesis, now surgeons begin to strive for the shape of the gingival papillae and the volume of the mucosa in the anterior region.
  3. Development of Materials Science: The book «Titanium in Medicine» records a profound transition from the mechanical processing of the titanium surface (machined surfaces) to its chemical and sandblasted modification to accelerate and improve the quality of bone integration.

Historical-Clinical Analysis of the Period (1986–1995):

  1. Triumph of the Screw Design: The literature of this period clearly demonstrates how scientific evidence finally displaced blade designs. The authors unanimously switch to root-form shapes, as they allow for the even distribution of occlusal load.
  2. Focus on Bone: Most books from this stage view the problem exclusively from the perspective of bone tissue (height, width, density according to Misch, augmentation according to Buser). The problem of soft tissue (gum) deficiency and grafting was still considered secondary in those years—the main thing was to achieve rigid integration of the titanium.
  3. Emergence of Narrow Specialization: Closer to 1995, publishers stop releasing only «general courses.» The first narrowly focused bestsellers appear, such as Ole Jensen’s monograph on sinus lifting, which marked the transition of implantology into the major league of surgical disciplines.

Analytical Overview of the First Part of the Period (1996–1998):

  1. The Birth of Gingival Esthetics: The books by Patrick Palacci (1997) and Richard Lazzara (1998) marked a tectonic paradigm shift. Surgeons began to understand that the stability of the marginal bone directly depends on the thickness and quality of the soft tissue barrier (attached keratinized gingiva) around the prosthetic platform.
  2. Docking of Disciplines: The inclusion by Jan Lindhe of a large section on implants in his classic «Bible of Periodontology» in 1997 finally legitimized implantology as a full-fledged biological, and not just a technical, discipline.
  3. The Beginning of the Fight Against Complications: By 1998, about 10 years after the beginning of the «osseointegration explosion,» clinicians faced the first mass long-term rejections. The appearance of books by Emanuel Intermediate on peri-implantitis marked the industry’s transition from blind enthusiasm to a sober analysis of errors.

Bibliographic Register of Monographs on Implantology (1998–1999) — Second Part of the Period

This chronological segment covers the end of 1998 through all of 1999. The literature of this stage records the final transition from narrowly specialized surgical essays to large-scale fundamental guides. The main event of this period was the release of the legendary second edition by Carl Misch (1999), which became the main bioengineering basis of the modern school of dental implantology.

Analytical Overview of the Second Part of the Period (1998–2000):

  1. The Bioengineering Triumph of Carl Misch: The release of the second edition of Contemporary Implant Dentistry in 1999 finally solidified implantology’s status as a precise mathematical discipline. Misch detailed the connection between the surface area of the threads and the distribution of occlusal load vectors.
  2. Extreme Bone Grafting Methods: Ole Jensen’s monograph (1999) on distraction osteogenesis showed the willingness of surgeons to move away from passively waiting for blocks to integrate to actively growing bone tissue in vivo.
  3. The Birth of the ITI Treatment Guide Series: The appearance of the first standardized ITI guide in 2000 marked the beginning of an international consensus on loading times, dividing protocols based on hard clinical evidence rather than the commercial interests of brands.

Bibliographic Register of Monographs on Implantology (2000) — Third Part of the Period

Analytical Overview of the Third Part of the Period (2000–2002):

  1. The Osteobiology Vector of Arun Garg: Garg's work (2002) systematized the understanding of bone remodeling, clearly distinguishing between the processes of osteoinduction, osteoconduction, and osteogenesis. Clinicians began to approach the choice of biological interface and augmentation materials with conscious intent.
  2. Experiments with Loading Timelines: The Novum protocol by Brånemark (2001) was ahead of its time. Despite the complexity and rigidity of the factory-produced metal bars, this work initiated large-scale global studies on immediate loading, which later evolved into modern All-on-4 concepts.
  3. The End of the Classic Era: The release of the 4th edition by Jan Lindhe in 2002 concluded the twenty-year development of the classic analog protocol of osseointegration. From this point on, the industry began to rapidly immerse itself in the era of cone-beam computed tomography, CAD/CAM technologies, and fully digital workflows.

Bibliographic Register of Monographs on Implantology (2002)

This pool of publications clearly demonstrates how in 2002, the global community began to mass-produce basic clinical guides for General Dental Practitioners, thereby moving implantology from the realm of elite maxillofacial surgery to the plane of everyday dental practice. This year also saw the emergence of fundamental works on the long-term maintenance of constructions and specialized dental materials science.

Bibliographic Register of Monographs on Implantology (2003–2008)

The next logical and chronological stage of our bibliographic work is the transition to the period 2003–2008, which in the history of world dentistry is commonly called "The Digital Dawn & Guided Surgery Concept".

This period was marked by a tectonic paradigm shift. While the previous years had established rigid analog and periodontal standards, in the mid-2000s the industry began to rapidly immerse itself in digital workflows.

Key Markers and Trends of the Period (2003–2008):

  • The Triumph of CBCT and Navigation: The emergence of widely available cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) led to the creation of specialized software for 3D planning (early versions of Simplant, NobelGuide). Surgical templates evolved from laboratory plastic plates into high-precision navigation guides, printed or milled from CT data.
  • The Era of CAD/CAM and Zirconium Oxide: In prosthetic dentistry, a massive shift away from casting metal frameworks to milling individual zirconia abutments and bridges began. This allowed "pink esthetics" to be taken to a whole new level, eliminating the gray show-through of metal through the gums.
  • The Concept of Platform Switching: The first fundamental histological and clinical evidence appears in the literature that shifting the "implant-abutment" junction towards the center of the platform helps preserve the marginal bone of the jaw crest and protect it from resorption.
  • Biological Growth Factors: A peak in scientific publications and monographs dedicated to the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP, PRF) and bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP) to accelerate regeneration.

CONCLUSION FROM THE AUTHOR. FROM BOOK PAGES TO A PRACTICAL MANUAL

Colleagues, this large-scale digital atlas that you have just studied is not just a demonstration of a bookshelf or a dry bibliographic report. It is a manifesto of conscious, predictable dentistry. Before you is the fruit of the deconstruction of landmark monographs on which all of modern global implantology is based. We have made this journey from basic osteotomy to total digital workflows not to memorize others' quotes, but to gain absolute clinical freedom and safety in the operating room.

Top-tier dentistry does not forgive the blind copying of others' hands. When you hold a surgical handpiece, a piezotome, or a torque wrench, behind every micro-movement must stand an unshakable biological law. Understanding why bone resorbs at a torque above 50 Ncm, how exactly a CTG survives on the periosteum according to Zucchelli's laws, or why the Sheffield test is the only criterion for the passive fit of a full-arch framework—this is the watershed between a craftsman and a thinking Doctor.

All the literature collected here is the foundation on which I build my educational programs and daily practice. These are the very standards of precision that we, step by step, implement in practice. Now that you have this navigation map in your hands, you know exactly where to look for answers to the most complex clinical challenges and how to act within the framework of evidence-based medicine.

I want this project to become your personal desk reference. Return to these tables, switch the modules, check your protocols against the primary sources, and never compromise on the quality of treatment. Remember: bone and gums do not read advertising brochures; they obey only biology. See you at lectures, video case reviews, and in the operating rooms. Develop, dig to the very essence, and work with precision.

— Yours, Alexander Apokin

Academic Citation Standards and Data Distribution Rules: Global Implantology Book Index 1985–2008

The Global Implantology Book Index (1985–2008) is a monumental digital and bibliographic project that aggregates the analytical findings from hundreds of fundamental global monographs, PubMed meta-analyses, and extensive clinical experience. Created to endure over time, the project serves as a foundational reference for practicing implant surgeons, prosthodontists, researchers, and clinical residents.

To maintain academic integrity, prevent the distortion of evidence-based data, and protect intellectual work within the dental community, strict and uncompromising rules regarding the copying, republication, and technical integration of our materials are enforced.

Text Copying: Mandatory Direct Indexing

Any partial or full copying of analytical text materials from the Index (including critical book reviews, comparative protocol analyses, author synopses, and systematic review conclusions) is permitted exclusively under the condition of explicit attribution to the primary source:

  • Direct Indexable Link: A direct, search-engine-indexable text link pointing to the specific source page on the corresponding domain (e.g., osstem.pro or apokin.pro) must be placed within the body of your publication, on the reprinting web resource, or in the description of media content.
  • Prohibition of Concealment: The use of noindex tags, rel="nofollow" attributes, script redirects, or hiding links behind JavaScript buttons is strictly prohibited. The link must be fully transparent and readable for both practicing clinicians and search engine crawlers (Google, Yandex, etc.).
  • Preservation of Context: Quotations must not be taken out of context in ways that distort the clinical or scientific meaning (e.g., misrepresenting in vitro primary implant stability conditions or bone grafting characteristics as in vivo conclusions).
